Specialty Metal Finishes Offer Protection and Industrial Design Flexibility

Dec 1, 2014 — Universal Air Filter® (www.uaf.com), a world leader in air filter design and production for the military, telecom and medical industries, offers a range of specialty metal finishes designed to increase its air filters’ performance in harsh, challenging environments. These RoHS Compliant finishes are applied to the filter’s metallic components – frames, Uni-grid support, brackets and honeycomb – and provide benefits for a wide range of applications.

Many military/defense applications require a protective finish against corrosion for MIL-C-5541 Class 1A and/or Class 3 compliance. Clear and yellow chemical conversion coatings are important for EMI shielding, creating and maintaining electrical continuity as a path for grounding. These coatings can prevent corrosion from becoming an insulator and potentially negating the effectiveness of the EMI shield.

Industrial design is an important aesthetic consideration for commercial equipment manufacturers in many fields, such as telecom, computer networking and medical. With anodize available in a range of colors, including black, red, blue and epoxy powder coating available to match most enclosure finishes, the filter becomes a decorative bezel so designers can bring the filter outside the enclosure as a key component of their industrial designs. This freedom of design has the added benefit of providing easy access to the air filter for maintenance.

Universal Air Filter offers a free prototype service to design engineers worldwide at www.uaf.com. An Internet-submitted prototype request, quick phone call, fax or e-mail is all it takes to get the process started. The free prototype is then produced and shipped within five working days.

Universal Air Filter finishes are RoHS compliant, and can be specified to meet numerous MIL SPEC and ASTM standards and classifications, including MIL-C-5541 Class 1A & Class 3, and zinc electroplate finish per ASTM-B633. UAF products meet the following standards and classifications: UL 94 HF-1; UL 900, CE; Telcordia NEBS GR-78-CORE and GR-63-CORE; and RoHS Compliance. When used as part of a fire enclosure, they also may be configured to comply with the flame-drip requirements described in UL 60950 and EN 60950.
